A typical AOP build team
In conjunction with our partners, supporting individuals, and the Lutheran Church of
Southern Africa, we are working to construct homes, to build a community support
center, and to provide community support and outreach programs for the
vulnerable children in Shongweni, Kwa ZuluNatal, South Africa.
|
In 2006 the project started by refurbishing an abandoned church, originally
constructed in 1988, and to build an adjacent parsonage in the village of
Shongweni. In partnership with the Lutheran Church of Southern Africa, a
pastor was called to help lead the local effort.
Beginning in 2007 additional partnerships were established with Habitat for
Humanity and Thrivent Financial Services.
Through this expanded partnership, 15 homes were constructed and caretakers were
selected for each. Today, over 70 young orphans have decent shelter and
the daily supervision to see that they are being fed and are kept safe.
With house construction well underway in 2008, the project opened a new activity -
the construction of a community center located adjacent to the Shongweni
Lutheran church.
This new facility will open capacity to provide
additional community assistance to the orphans in care, and to their caretakers.
